Start with what you'll do
| Use | RAM | Storage | Processor |
|---|---|---|---|
| School & browsing | 8GB | 256GB SSD | Core i3/i5, 6th gen+ |
| Office work | 8GB | 256–512GB SSD | Core i5, 7th gen+ |
| Programming | 16GB | 512GB SSD | Core i5/i7, 8th gen+ |
| Design & video | 16–32GB | 512GB+ SSD | Core i7 + graphics card |
SSD vs HDD
Always choose an SSD if you can. It makes the laptop start in seconds and feel fast.
Processor generation
An "8th Gen Core i5" is newer and faster than a "4th Gen Core i5". For most people, 8th gen or newer is the sweet spot.
Battery life and power
With unreliable power, battery matters. Check the battery health on UK-used laptops and consider a spare charger.
UK-used or new?
UK-used business laptops (EliteBook, Latitude, ThinkPad) are built tougher than many cheap new laptops and cost far less. New laptops give you full manufacturer warranty.
